## How to compare deck builders

1. Confirm the service you need: deck building, deck repair, composite deck installation, deck replacement, deck staining and refinishing, a porch or screened porch, or a pergola or patio cover.
2. Ask each company for a written scope: materials, framing and footings, square footage, railings, permits and inspections, and site cleanup.
3. Ask for proof of liability insurance and workers' compensation, and verify any contractor licensing with the relevant state or local authority.
4. Ask who pulls the building permit and schedules inspections, and confirm the workmanship warranty in writing.
5. Get terms in writing: schedule, payment milestones, and cancellation policy.
